Resilience is a really interesting subject that makes psychology very practical and relevant to all of us. Once you understand that resilience is a skill that can be developed, you can see the far-reaching affects it has on our lives and our performance.
Resilience is the pulling together of concepts around understanding your self and your mental toughness which is your ability to think in a way to get you the results you need, as well as your emotional intelligence which allows you to make clean choices about how you live your life, how you manage your emotions and how you look after yourself. Imagine how you would feel if you were:
- getting the best out of yourself
- having really great relationships
- coping with whatever life throws at you.
Building the capacity to have the resilience you need, is what resilience is all about.
Training yourself to think in such a way that you can turn life events to your advantage, such as not being a failure but a survivor… it’s a different mindset. It’s about having specific scripts that you can use to help train and develop your self to make the most of your own potential. What matters is maximising your potential relative to what you want to do in your life.
Resilience is very closely linked to the management of stress and we know that stress is one of the big problems for us in life. Some stress is good but it becomes problematical when the hormone cortisol, starts to kick in and we are not able to process it fast enough, producing a physiological response in our body.
Resilience enables us to ask: How do we manage our stress? How do we get in control of ourselves, our emotions and thoughts, so we can be the best that we can be? Building resilience allows us to bounce back quicker from failure and make more affective choices to improve ourselves when things start getting tough.
QED ROPES TOOLKIT helps us build resilience
Regulation, our ability to know ourselves and our ability to do something about that self awareness. If you can’t chose how you feel, you will very rarely feel the way you want to. You need to be able to separate out what a feeling is, an emotion, a mindset, and attitude…. so that we can make the right choices. It’s really easy to feel great every day if you know how to, which is very important.
Optimism, which is linked to confidence. An optimistic and confident person is a good person to have around you. You gain confidence by being good at what you do and using optimism over a period of time.
Purpose, the why am I doing what I am doing. Do I have a sense of purpose? Do I know where I am going (future focus) and am I clear on what I am trying to do? Something is worth doing if it makes sense to you. The framework of having a vision/mission/objective/strategy/tactics has served us in economics for many years, but many companies and individuals seem to have lost that vision.
Energy you have to have the energy in your body and mind/brain to optimise yourself and be resilient enough. We often neglect our energy and then when things go wrong we don’t have enough. How do we energise, oxygenise and optimise to make sure that our brain and body is working in a way that allows us to deal with the stress and pressure that life throws at us. We need to recharge and renew batteries of the brain and body to regenerate and enhance ourselves.
Stamina is about stoicism, getting over yourself, weathering the storm and getting on with it. We need stamina to focus on making choices about what we do and what we don’t do. As we focus, we concentrate on doing something now, one thing at a time, and stop doing everything else whilst we do that thing. The more we multitask the less efficient we are.
Resilience is about surrounding yourself with people who add to and stimulate each others energy. There will always be differences in people and thus conflict will occur. Resilient people can constantly challenge each other without getting bent out of shape by it. If you are good at taking feedback and managing your emotions, you won’t get stressed out about all that. If you haven’t developed your resilience you will find it more difficult to take feedback, failure and criticism, which will dramatically affect your confidence and performance.
