Meet Graham Arrowsmith, who has a sales and marketing background and Kevin Appleby, an accountant and management consultant.
Kevin and Graham have had to do this on numerous occasions. Kevin worked for a company that took a huge downturn following the new government coalition. The company relied on government work and outsourcing, so when the government spending stopped, profits plummeted and redundancies ensued.
Graham has learnt a valuable lesson when dealing with redundancy. You must understand that it is the job that has been made redundant not you … that has stuck with Graham. The chances are that many of us will have some redundancies at some point in our roles. You don’t know when these things will happen. It’s not sad or all about you – businesses just do that as they expand and contract but the world is a big place and you can move on. It’s at these moments when you need resilience to fight the negative stresses. You need your resilience at its peak to cope with change.
People forget that there are going to be bumps along the road in life and you have to work hard at things.
Kevin felt that during redundancy, things happen at such a fast pace and you feel completely out of control for a short amount of time. This is where your resilience toolkit can kick in to help plan the next steps… and help yourself get back on-track and into another job/career.
Every single bit of adversity and change is only difficult if you see it as such. There are in fact, as many opportunities as there are risks.
So how can we make change happen?
Graham and Kevin have teamed up to deliver “The Next 100 Days Podcast”, a resource to learn how to move your business forward, offering practical advice and guidance that you can put into action and make a difference in your own organisation within the next 100 days.
The Next 100 Days Podcast talks about how you take something that is quite practical, that you may want to do in your business and implement it, in a way that you can actually make a difference within the next 100 days. It doesn’t matter what it is, for example the last podcast was about recruitment… if you had to recruit a senior member into your small business, what would you do over the first 100 days. The recruitment consultant gives great advice on how we would make that happen.
The key to is to implement something.
Graham suggests that during the 100 days, you should do 5 days planning, 90 days execution and 5 days review. But saying that, if you start something from scratch you need to know where you are now… what you need to do next, then execute the plan.
Most business owners will have a raft of projects on, so Graham and Kevin help you take one thing as a project and give it a beginning, a middle and an end. If you have 10 projects on and do a little on each of them – none of them are ever going to get to the end.
How do I know if I am doing the right thing? The right thing for you is the right thing at that time, we are all on different pages and we are all on different challenges. They want to bring about change to relatively small businesses. We can listen to others cope and actually helps ourselves.
The real thing that excites Graham about business growth, is when those businesses have completely “out thought” and done something totally different that will completely change the market – like Costa changing the way you buy coffee.
If you are simply trying to make changes in your life or if you have the energy, dynamism and creativity to start a new business, this has to go side by side with the focused execution, hard work and discipline to make it happen.
The idea of focus and implementation can be daunting to some. Most entrepreneurs have lots of ideas and are quick implementers but they rarely put systems in place. Kevin and Graham help people put the system in place behind the ideas to make things longer lasting. So have those ideas but pick out the nuggets and put a system in place and really make them happen. This is where coaching is so useful, as it helps you put the things in place that don’t natural fall into your skill set.
